Supervision While each student is ultimately responsible for their own conduct, the Academic Connections team of administrative, instructional, and residential staff work together to provide clear guidelines and careful supervision for every student in the program.
This program includes students ranging in age from 15 to 18 years old. All students are expected to follow the same rules. Inside the classroom, instructors and teaching assistants are prepared to help students adjust to the academic demands of the program and the experience of college life on a university campus. Outside the classrooms and/or laboratories, students are supervised by Residential Assistants (RAs). RAs live in the residence hall to:
 Provide support and encouragement
Enforce the rules and regulations of the program
Plan and conduct the recreational and social programs
Housing and Dining
Students may choose to live on-campus or commute to campus daily. Students that live in the residence halls will have an RA assigned. The RA group format is an important part of the residential experience for students since it provides participants with a sense of identity and belonging within the larger program community. Each RA group has approximately 14-16 students.
Students that commute to campus will also be assigned an RA. Participation in recreational activities is optional for non-residential students.
Students are assigned to a suite style dormitory with five bedrooms with single, double, or triple accommodations. The suite has a common living room and bathroom. Students have access to lounges, laundry facilities, and public telephones. To the extent possible, students are assigned roommates of a similar age.
The floors are gender specific and students are not allowed to visit students of the opposite sex in their room.
Dining service provides 3 meals per day with unlimited portions
Daily Life
Residential students are required to attend all classes and activities. Non-residential students are required to attend all classes and can elect to attend all activities; they are required to check in at the site office prior to class every morning and check out when they are leaving the program for the day. All non-residential students must be checked out no later than 10:30 PM each day.
On Tuesday and Thursday evenings a SAT Test-Taking Skills Workshop is offered. There are six session to the workshop covering an overview of SAT and test taking skills, reading and verbal skills, mathematics, writing, final review, and exam. On Wednesday evenings there is an opportunity to meet with members of the UCSD Admissions staff to learn about the UC application process with a question and answer session. Attendance is optional for both the SAT Workshop and the UCSD Admissions sessions.
There is very little unstructured time. The purpose is two-fold; the program is scheduled to expose participants to as many aspects of UCSD and college life as possible during the three weeks and provide a well supervised, age appropriate, academic and residential program.
Weekend Schedule
Residential and non-residential students participate in a full schedule of on-campus recreational and social activities, which are supervised by the RAs and administrative staff. In addition to sports and games, weekend activities include special event such as dances, movies and a talent show. Off campus excursions are planned to a Padres game at Petco Park, Balboa Park, La Jolla Shores, Birch Aquarium, etc.. Students have "down time" in the mornings to catch up on laundry, studies, or just relax and spend time with friends. Meal schedule remains the same as weekdays.
Program Activities
Activities are planned during afternoon, evening activity times and on weekends. Each activity will be supervised by the RAs. The RA's goal is to offer different activities so all students can find something they enjoy doing each day. Activities include board games, arts and crafts, movies and athletics. At UCSD the "sun and surf" atmosphere creates the perfect combination for outdoor activities. Athletic facilities include a state-of-the-art, campus complex with tennis courts, swimming pools, a track and field complex, playing fields and a climbing wall. Athletic facilities are shared with other programs and are supervised by our staff only during scheduled activity periods.
Students with Disabilities
UCSD Extension provides academic support services to students with qualifying and documented disabilities in compliance with Section 504 of the rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the American with Disabilities Act of 1990. |
