The Human Body: Inside and Out

Prerequisites:  Students with some background in biology are recommended for this course.  However any student that has a genuine interest in science is welcome.

Course Description:  This course will dive into the fascinating and improbable world of the human body. Human anatomy and physiology will be the emphasis. Students will learn the various tissues and organ systems that comprise the body, how they work, and how they work together. Lectures will provide students will a basic background and understanding of anatomy and physiology, while laboratory sessions will give the students an opportunity to examine the tissues discussed in class up close and personal. In addition, scientists from various disciplines at UCSD will visit the class to discuss their personal experiences in science and medicine.

This course will consist of lectures and laboratories. Laboratory sessions will be diverse including such activities as: human brain examination, light and electron microscope examination of body tissues and organs, visits to laboratories across campus to see real-life science in action, visits from physicians and scientists on campus to discuss experiences and give advice on future careers in science and medicine.

 

Course Objectives:

- To convey a basic understanding of the primary components of the human body, what they look like, and how they function
- To provide a window for students to see what a life in science or medicine may have in store for them
- To instill a sense of wonder at how amazing the human body is and how fortunate we all are to inhabit one as we make our way through life!

Course Outline:

Week 1: Epithelium, connective tissue, cartilage, bone, muscle
Week 2: Heart, blood vessels, respiratory system, skin
Week 3: Digestive system, urinary system, liver, hearing, vision

Supplies: (all course supplies and materials are provided by the program)

 

Expectations: Students in this course should have a genuine interest in biology.  Science is hard enough without caring about it!
